FROM THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO’S CATALOG

This is a classic example of an early north coast batik, with vibrant, rich colors and lively but sure-handed drawing. The piece reflects early cross influences between the conservative style of the central courts and the brighter, more experimental style of the north coast. For example, the hip wrapper itself is a traditional garment type from central Java, and here it is embellished at the ends with triangular forms (tumpals) that are a feature of north coast sarongs.
