FROM THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO’S CATALOG

European fascination with East Asia manifested itself in a style now known as chinoiserie. Although the name implies a connection with China, in fact it applies to suggestions of any Asian cultures—for example, the tiny palm tree in the embroidered decoration on this petticoat or skirt panel.
