FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG

The Flight into Egypt is narrated in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:13–23). An angel appears to Joseph in a dream, instructing him to flee with Mary and the infant Jesus from the murderous King Herod. This painting evokes scenes by medieval masters such as Giotto and the Limbourg brothers. However, details such as the spongy, broom-like trees reveal that it's a modern interpretation of such exemplars.
