Looming clouds, defined by heavy daubs of paint, dominate half the composition in this atmospheric riverscape by the Rouen-based impressionist Albert Lebourg. The French impressionists primarily chose recreational activities such as boating, promenading, and dining as their subjects while capturing the beauty of the River Seine and its banks. Some artists looked beyond the pleasures of leisure and the picturesque by exploring other aspects of modern life. Here, the swirls of pollution rising from smokestacks reflect the impact of industrialization and urbanization on the natural landscape.
