FROM THE BARNES FOUNDATION’S CATALOG
Born in the Netherlands, Corneille became associated with Lyon, an important court center during the French Renaissance. The artist earned commissions to paint members of the French court, calling for a refined style. Here we find naturalistic details such as the sitter's translucent blue eyes and red beard. The subject's costuming—velvet doublet, feathered cap, and chained necklace with pendant—indicates both wealth and status. Corneille conveyed these fine details through the application of multiple layers of glazes.
