ABOUT THIS WORK
A dawn rosary procession dissolving into a street brawl — the scene behind the everyday Spanish idiom "acabar como el rosario de la aurora," roughly "to end in total chaos." The idiom's legendary origin predates the canvas; Lucas Velázquez painted the phrase at its most literal, and people have been arguing over the picture ever since. It remains best known by its Spanish title.
