This screen was likely originally paired with another that would have featured spring and summer flowers. Here autumnal flowers (bush clover, morning glories, pinks, and hibiscus) are arranged like a bouquet in the center of the screen. Winter plants such as narcissus, nanten berries, and a stalk with shriveled beans are featured on the left. By placing the lowest-lying plants in the upper right, the artist gave the composition a sense of depth, as though the viewer is looking into a garden.
