FROM THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO’S CATALOG

Men’s formal clothing in the late 18th and early 19th centuries was often made of textured silk fabric with rich floral embroidery. A coat such as this would have had matching knee breeches and a coordinating vest called a waistcoat.
