Manet based this etching on his own painting of the same year (now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) depicting his frequent model, Victorine Meurent, in the costume of an "espada," or toreador. Japanese prints and, above all, the etchings of Goya, have been cited as sources for the composition.
