The landscape of Provence is scattered with defunct quarries like Bibémus, which has been abandoned since the 1830s. Cézanne produced many paintings and watercolors of the quarry's wild, overgrown landscape while he was renting a small shack on its outskirts. Here the orange stone of the hillside is visible peeking out among the abundant green pines.
