Although the title of this painting references the woman's high-collared cape, the main subject of the work is her spectacular hat, decked with flowers, ribbons, and ruffles. The large swirls of paint defining lush petals, folds of fabric, and scalloped edges are brushed on thickly, while the cape is thinly painted in subdued colors. Renoir enjoyed painting women in extravagant hats as a pretext for exploring color and brushwork.
